Top 5 Best Organic Crib Mattresses

Humans spend one-third of our lives sleeping, whereas babies sleep up to 10 to 20 hours per day. As a result, the surface you sleep on must be comfortable, firm yet soft, and sustainable.

Especially when it comes to your little one, the type of mattress they sleep on top of matters a lot. Your baby is too busy snoring away to understand terms like ‘natural,’ ‘organic,’ and ‘eco-friendly.’

The top 5 best organic crib mattresses are Naturepedic Coil Crib, Avocado, LA Baby Foam, Colgate Eco-Classica, and the Green Cradle.

If you’re planning to purchase a crib mattress for your baby, you likely want to choose a safe, organic, and environmentally friendly crib mattress. Why? Well, babies spend the better half of their life sleeping away inside their cribs.

And most mainstream crib mattresses produce a considerable amount of toxins which exposes your little one to unhealthy and unsafe levels of chemicals during their sleep. Here are the top five organic and eco-friendly crib mattresses. Combine these with non-toxic cribs to ensure the safety and health of your adorable baby:

NaturepedicOrganic Coil Crib Mattress

Everyone’s favorite organic mattresses, Naturepedic Organic mattresses, are Global Organic Textile Standards certified. The innerspring line is fabricated from GOTS-certified cotton, optimum quality innerspring coil, organic cotton, and polyethylene waterproofing.

Each material used in designing the Naturepedic Organic Coil Crib Mattress is certified by Oregon Tilth to ensure that mattress meets all GOTS requirements. It also boasts Green Guard Gold Certification to give parents the peace of mind that their little one is sleeping on a safe surface.

This is the company that I recommend currently and you can read more about Naturepedic with my articles where to buy, is it worth it, and its crib mattresses.

LA Baby Foam Organic Crib Mattress

WithCerti-PUR-US certification, this high-quality mattress is known for producing low chemical emission levels. Soy foam is a firm, high-density mattress that provides your baby with the necessary support. Since foam typically contains petroleum, this mattress manufactured from soy helps reduce your effects on the eco.

On the flip side, you’ll find a memory foam layer ideal for toddlers strong enough to contour their growing bodies. The mattress boasts a blended organic cotton cover, whereas the cover is waterproof and hypoallergenic to offer a safe and comfy sleeping surface for sensitive babies.

With not more than 13 pounds, this super lightweight mattress comes with intricately designed air vents that enhance durability and ensure longevity.

Avocado Organic Crib Mattress

Avocado is a well-renowned mattress brand that offers two excellent cribs manufactured from state-of-the-art GOTS organic certified wool and cotton and GOLS organic latex.

These comfy mattresses boast a unique two-sided design with one slightly plush for toddlers, whereas the latter is firmer for toddlers. The Avocado mattress boasts an organic flax pad both above and below the support coils and an additional inch of GOLS organic latex to offer better height. In addition, they eliminate the use of glue by utilizing six internal hand-tufts to reinforce its perimeters and up durability.

With various necessary certifications, this completely safe and organic mattress boasts a 25 years limited warranty. The bed lacks a waterproof plastic and polyurethane layer and instead comprises a GOTS cotton protector pad. The layer efficiently offers waterproofing yet prevents exposure to harmful chemicals.

One thing to watch for is poor customer service since about November 2020. I noticed an uptick in complaints from customers so I removed Avocado from my list of recommended companies. Hopefully, this is only temporary.

Colgate Eco-Classica Organic Crib Mattress

Colgate’s Eco-Classic is CertiPUR-US certified to ensure their mattress boasts little to no chemicals. On top of that, this high-quality mattress is compliant with Green Guard’s standards, meaning they meet stringent VCOs requirements.

The cover of this firm yet comfy mattress is manufactured from certified organic cotton, whereas the backward of this cover is waterproof. It safeguards your mattress from any accidents that may occur.

Green Cradle Crib Mattress

The Green cradle is a leading mattress brand dedicated to manufacturing organic and high-quality products. Green Cradle’s mattress boasts four inches of GOLS certified latex firm enough to ensure your baby can sleep soundly.

To ensure their mattresses are 100% organic, they don’t offer a waterproof cover. Instead, the Brand recommends buyers use two wool puddle pads.

To Sum it Up

According to an in-depth study by the University of Texas at Austin, crib mattresses release more than 30 different types of VOCs and other harmful airborne chemicals, including fragrance allergens, endocrine-disrupting phthalates, and so on.

Typically, mattresses off-gas these harmful chemicals at room temperature, which threatens your indoor air quality. Moreover, the study showed that chemical emissions from crib mattresses are vital within the baby’s breathing zone.

Ensure maximum healthy safety of your little one by carefully picking a crib mattress that is 100% organic. Be wary of brands that green-wash their bed by ensuring the cover isn’t the only organic thing. In addition, make sure your mattress boasts all the proper certifications and lacks flame retardant chemicals.

For this reason, it’s always a good idea to avoid polyurethane foam, vinyl waterproofing features, soy foam mattresses, and synthetic or recycled materials. It is because these contain chemicals harmful to your little one’s health. Lastly, make sure your child’s bed is firm to ensure a safe sleeping time.

Each of the above companies offer quality products and I am confident that you would be happy with any product you purchase from one of them.

A semi-retired workaholic in Thailand is a challenge. It is too hot to keep building adobe and earthbag buildings so a new project was needed. I became interested in bed frames after purchasing a bamboo bed frame from a local supplier here and I learned there is little information about them on the Internet. So now I spend my days researching, testing, and reporting my findings to help others while having an occasional beer and istening to 60s and 70s B side rock, blues, and much more.
