Ashley Sleep Hybrid Mattress Review: 3 Pros 6 Cons

If you are in the market for a new bed and you live anywhere in the vicinity of an Ashley Furniture HomeStore, then chances are good that you’ve considered looking for a new mattress there.

Ashely Sleep hybrid pros include inexpensive, comfort, support, and they have been around longer than most bed-in-a-box companies. Cons include poor durability, longevity, sagging, and no trial period.

Sure, models from the Ashley Sleep line are really competitively priced, but does the old adage about getting what you pay for hold true here?

Based on numerous consumer reviews, the answer is likely yes. These are attractively priced, but constant issues with durability and longevity seem to follow the brand.

TIP: I finally made two recommendations after all this research so click here to see the results of almost 6 months of work here.

Accordingly, it may make sense to buy one if the budget is too low to buy a better product. An Ashley mattress may hold up okay for a year or so, but it does not seem wise to expect it to do much more than that.

Alternatively, you may want to go this route for placement in a guestroom, cottage, cabin, or RV where the bed is seldom used.

Is Ashley Sleep Hybrid Any Good?

Customer reviews suggest numerous durability issues. Still, you may be tempted to buy one under limited circumstances.

WARNING: HAHAHAHAHAHHA, Consumer Affairs recommends Ashley Furniture and makes money with affiliate links. They recommend it, yet most of the 787 owners who provided a review disagree with a slightly higher than a 1-Star rating!

And the two “Top Ashely Furniture Reviews We Found” highlighted prominently are 5-Stars, even though there are only a few 5-star ratings. Source Keep in mind that it is for all the company’s furniture, not just mattresses.

Pro 1: History

Like most companies, there are good and bad products and since more than 30,000 customers say that this model is good it is hard for me to argue, but I am working on it haha.

The company has been around since the 1990s and that is much longer than most of the recent bed-in-a-box startups.

Pro 2: Inexpensive

Got a really small budget? If so, then an Ashley Sleep mattress may be for you. It’ll hold up all right for a year or two, during which time you could be saving for a better brand.

Pro 3: Hybrid Coil Support

I really like that you have the option of choosing a hybrid mattress that features both foam and coils. I just wish that the materials and construction of these models were better.

This is worth watching and make sure to read the long comment by Donna Vanwart

Con 1: Warranty Issues

There seem to be many warranty issues reported by owners stating things such as:

  • have to pay for a tool to “self analyze”, which is a couple of washers and a string.
  • never received the warranty paperwork, was told it would be sent separately.
  • the company refuses to accept the warranty claim
  • a third party actually manages the warranty

Con 2:

Consumer Reports rated four Ashley Sleep models and the results are less than flattering:

  1. The Perfect 10: Not a perfect rating but a 74.
  2. Chime Elite: Not so elite with only a 67.
  3. Anniversary Edition: One of the lowest scores that I have seen on Consumer Reports at 62.
  4. American Classic Plush Latex: A new low, wow, only a score of 45.

Con 3: Trial Period

Most of their competitors offer 100 days to 18 months trial period so they are a long way behind here.

Con 4: Poor Durability and Longevity

They may come with 10-year warranties, but don’t count on these mattresses to last that long.

Con 5: Sagging

Many customers report that their Ashley Sleep mattress begins to sag within a surprisingly short time. If you have back issues, this definitely won’t help.

Con 6: Comfort Issues

These mattresses may feel either too soft or too hard without ever hitting that Goldilocks zone of just right.

Should You Buy from the Ashley Sleep Hybrid Collection?

It’s doubtful that any of these models a good investment in better sleep. They may work for a short time, but it seems unlikely it will last.

Only get one if the price is your foremost concern and you’ll be able to upgrade in a year or two.

These mattresses also might work in a seldom-used guestroom. However, you should be able to do better by buying elsewhere, and for not much more money.

An Overview of Ashley Furniture HomeStores

This American furniture store chain was founded in 1997 by Ronald G. Wanek. Currently, it’s the leading furniture retailer in the nation, although locations also have been opened in countries such as Mexico, Canada, Chile, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Bangladesh.

Although this is a fairly new company when compared to the big companies, it is considerably older than most bed-in-a-box companies.

All furniture that is sold in these stores is manufactured by Ashley. However, many of the stores are independently owned and operated by franchisees. Ashley Furniture Industries is the retailer’s parent company. Headquartered in Arcadia,

Wisconsin, the father and son team of Ron and Todd Wanek are still in charge. They oversee more than 18,000 employees, and in Advance, North Carolina, the company manages a manufacturing and distribution complex that measures 3.8 million square feet.

Ashley Furniture Corporation, the precursor of Ashley Furniture Industries, has been in operation since 1945. Both HomeStores and its parent company are highly active in charitable causes.

An Overview of the Hybrid Collection

While the Ashley Sleep line actually consists of many options, we’re going to focus on two of the hybrid models. These are the 10-inch and 12-inch hybrid in a box.

The website boasts that both mattresses simply need to be unpacked from their boxes and unrolled before being ready for a good night’s sleep.

Each features foam layers on the top and a layer of individually wrapped coils on the bottom.

TIP: Ashley recommends that you allow your new mattress to expand for 48 hours before sleeping on it.

These hybrids must be used with a proper foundation and/or a box spring.

In fact, on it’s the website, the manufacturers note that these products are suitable for use on pretty much any base from traditional and platform bases to adjustable beds.

Foundations, box springs and bases all are sold separately.

Products from the Hybrid Collection

Let’s take a closer look at both the 10-inch and the 12-inch hybrid mattresses so that you can get a better idea of what’s included and whether or not one of these might be right for you.

The 10-Inch Hybrid Queen Mattress in a Box

For the purposes of our review, we’ll be comparing queen size to queen size, since this is a perennially popular choice.

The 10-inch hybrid Ashley Sleep is available in twin, full, queen, and king sizes. A foundation or box spring is required and is delivered via UPS or FedEx for free.

You can see all the information on their website here (not an affiliate link).

The company boasts that this hybrid gives you “the best of both worlds” with gel-infused memory foam that not only keeps you cool but also helps to relieve pressure in addition to body-contouring pocketed coils.

The coils are what provides the necessary support.

Ashley describes this 10-inch hybrid as providing medium comfort, which means that it straddles the line between being soft and firm.

The high-density gel memory foam is designed to give you lumbar support and there’s also a layer of high-density quilt foam for extra softness and comfort.

Ashley touts its “individual power packed wrapped coils” and the two rows of coils on the perimeter that are made with 13-gauge wire and measure nine inches in length.

These perimeter coils are designed to provide better edge-to-edge support, which can be important for people who sleep on the edge of the bed.

TIP: Good edge support also is critical for people who have mobility issues or who may need a little assistance getting into and out of bed.

Ashley notes that this mattress is manufactured with hypoallergenic materials that won’t cause allergies. Materials include polyester, acrylic, filament poly, para-aramid fiber, and viscose.

Each comes with a 10-year warranty. However, it’s worth noting that if you buy a foundation or box spring from another brand, this warranty may be voided.

These are designed to be no-flip, making them easier to care for.

The 12-Inch Hybrid Queen Mattress in a Box

This slightly thicker hybrid mattress comes with a slightly higher price tag.

Still, both options are really affordable when compared with most of their competition, and the minor price difference between the 10-inch and 12-inch models may make it worthwhile to splurge.

You can visit there site for more information here (not an affiliate link).

The 12-inch hybrid is available in all the same sizes as the 10-inch, expect that you also have the option of choosing a California King at this level.

You still get free shipping via FedEx or UPS, but now your comfort level is ultra plush. This may be a bit too soft, or even way too soft, for some people.

Like the 10-inch model, this one combines the support of coils with the comfort of foam.

This mattress has an extra layer of foam so that you have high-density gel memory foam, high-density quilt foam, and upholstery-grade comfort foam.

The individually wrapped coils are similar to the other model, and there are two rows of perimeter coils to help stabilize the edges.

One of the main differences between the 12-inch and the 10-inch is that this upgraded mattress features CertiPur-US materials.

This should mean that it is made with high-quality materials that are natural and extremely unlikely to trigger your allergies.

How Can You Buy an Ashley Sleep Hybrid?

It’s possible to buy both the 10-inch and the 12-inch hybrid models directly from the AshleyFurniture.com website. Alternatively, if you live in a place where a HomeStore is conveniently nearby, you may be able to go to the showroom to try before you buy.

The retail stores offer the opportunity to schedule private, in-store appointments if you prefer.

When it comes to returns, it pays to act with caution. While many manufacturers that produce beds in boxes have extremely generous 100-night or more trial terms and free returns, Ashley does not appear to be the same.

In fact, their website details that mattresses and foundations only may be returned if they are delivered damaged or found to be defective.

That means there’s really no “I just didn’t like it” returns allowed. Not exactly the most customer-friendly return policy.
